Tourism
Overview
Sapporo's tourism GDP has grown faster than its overall city GDP, fueled by a substantial rise in foreign tourists, making it a key driver of the local economy. The city is renowned for its beautiful natural surroundings and excellent food resources, leading to high overall satisfaction among both domestic and international visitors. Tourists consistently rate Sapporo as a highly appealing destination. Further growth is anticipated by leveraging the charm of Sapporo and Hokkaido to tap into the continually growing global demand for tourism.
In order to position Sapporo as the tourism hub of Hokkaido, several events are held that allow visitors to enjoy the delights of the four seasons, including the Sapporo Snow Festival, which attracts more than two million visitors every year from Japan and abroad. In addition, Sapporo is enhancing its high-value tourism experiences by leveraging its unique offerings for visitors. This includes boosting its appeal as an urban snow resort and promoting nighttime sightseeing. Sapporo is strategically promoting tourism both domestically and internationally, working to attract more visitors and to create an accommodating environment for the growing number of foreign tourists.
Furthermore, Sapporo is actively promoting the attraction of MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events by taking advantage of the city's unique and rich natural environment, food, and other qualities. In 1993, the Hokkaido MICE Promotion Committee was established, comprising MICE promotion and support organizations from seven cities in Hokkaido, including Sapporo, to promote the attraction of MICE events.
