Strategic Industries

An Overview of
Sapporo’s Industries

When you think of Sapporo, the first things that come to mind may be our historically strong tourism industry and delicious food. However, Sapporo has also strategically prioritized the key industries of IT, renewable energy and biotechnology.

The wider Hokkaido region is rich in abundant energy sources, including wind and solar power and has the highest potential for renewable energy in Japan. A national initiative aims to establish the region as a hub for renewable energy within Japan. Designated by the government, Sapporo City, the capital of Hokkaido and the economic center of this region, aims to attract funds, talent, and knowledge related to green industries from around the world, including Asia, as a global financial center.

There is currently a national project taking place with the aim of establishing Sapporo as a ‘green hub’, where next-generation semiconductors are produced by state-of-the-art companies like Rapidus Corporation, alongside a host of businesses pioneering the environmental industry.

Along with these developments, economic growth is expected in various fields, including the IT industry, which has been promoted for over 30 years, as well as tourism and food industries. Sapporo is a promising investment region with great potential in a number of sectors.
