Exploring Australia’s Innovation Ecosystems and Tech Collaborations
Our delegation from the City of Sapporo and the Sapporo Transnational Expansion and Partnership (STEP) visited New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria in early September to explore Australia’s innovation ecosystems. Focused on quantum technology, deep tech, and sustainable digital infrastructure, the visit provided us with valuable insights into global collaboration.
Hosted by Quantum Australia, our delegation engaged in a multi-day program that highlighted the strength of a well-integrated ecosystem. We observed firsthand how Australia’s startups, academic institutions, and government bodies collaborate closely. Through visits to leading institutions such as the University of Sydney, UNSW, and CSIRO, our team learned how the public and private sectors unite to support startup commercialization in cutting-edge fields like quantum technology and digital health.
Beyond quantum technology, our visit focused on the critical balance between digital infrastructure and environmental sustainability. As Sapporo aims to grow its digital industries, securing reliable data centers is essential. However, finding a practical balance between technological expansion and environmental conservation remains a shared global challenge.
To explore practical solutions, we engaged in productive discussions with Australian specialists in sustainable data centers and digital infrastructure. Learning from these real-world use cases provided us with useful references for how Hokkaido can expand its tech infrastructure while preserving its natural environment.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Quantum Australia and all the organizations that welcomed us and shared their expertise. We look forward to turning these dialogues into lasting connections between Sapporo and Australia, and we hope to welcome our Australian counterparts to Sapporo soon.
